Four MCDI Abstracts on the Impact of Malaria Control Programs Accepted to ASTMH Conference

MCDI's Bioko Island Malaria Control Project (BIMCP) and Accelerating the Reduction of Malaria Morbidity and Mortality (ARM3) projects will present four abstracts on the impact of malaria control programs to the American Society for Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASMTH) Annual Meeting in Baltimore from November 5-9, 2017. MCDI's malaria programs in Benin and Equatorial Guinea are two examples of comprehensive programs that can show measurable impact amongst target populations.

The Benin National Malaria Control Program submitted an abstract that presented an assessment of Behavior Change Communications (BCC) interventions in support of malaria control activities in Benin that were conducted by the ARM3 project. This assessment found that those who had been targeted with malaria prevention messaging through social mobilization, radio programs and community flyer distribution had a higher rate of understanding of how to prevent malaria, were more likely to sleep under a bed net, and were more likely to receive doses of antimalarial medicines during antenatal care visits than the control group who had not received targeted messaging.

As part of MCDI's BIMCP team, GIS Officer Megan Perry will present "Understanding the environment of malaria-related behaviors on Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea", which aims to illustrate the results of Indoor Residual Spraying and the use of Long Lasting Insecticide Treated Nets (LLINs) on Bioko Island through the 2016 Malaria Indicator Survey (MIS). The presentation will use statistics from the MIS to find data patterns that help the BIMCP to better understand the household environments of individuals who actively participate in these interventions versus those who do not.

Kenneth Murray, BIMCP Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, will present "The Relationship between P. falciparum parasitemia from MIS data among pregnant women and children and assessing the use of ANC data for estimating malaria prevalence". This study also uses data from the MIS on Bioko Island to determine the linear correlation between parasitemia prevalence among pregnant women and children which has been shown to have a strong relationship in previous results. However, this study monitors the strength of this association among the two sub-populations, which if found to be strong, would allow the use of prenatal care attendees as an indicator for malaria prevalence estimation on the entire island.

Assistant Project Manager Guillermo Garcia will present the fourth abstract related to our work in malaria control, "Assessing the impact of malaria and malaria control interventions on the welfare of the population on Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea". This study uses the MIS data on socio-economic status of Bioko Island residents and on self-reported malaria prevalence to determine whether malaria control interventions of the BIMCP have an effect on health improvement as well as the enhancement of socio-economic welfare.
