Two MCDI Cervical Cancer Abstracts Accepted to Present at ASTMH Annual Meeting

MCDI's two cervical cancer screening and treatment (CCST) programs in Myanmar and Equatorial Guinea will be presenting their findings at the American Society for Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH) Annual Meeting to be held November 5-9, 2017 in Baltimore, Maryland.

The Myanmar CCST project submitted an abstract titled "Preliminary report of a study on effectiveness, safety and acceptability of cervical cancer screening using visual inspection with acetic acid and cold coagulation based single visit approach in Yat Sauk Township in Shan State, Myanmar". The abstract was submitted by project consultant Dr. Mya Thida, who is a professor at the University of Medicine in Yangon, Myanmar. The Myanmar CCST project trained health workers on visual inspection of the cervix using acetic acid (VIA) and treatment of lesions using cold coagulation, and has been conducting mass screening and treatment events throughout Shan State. MCDI is the first organization to use cold coagulation in Myanmar. Data collected from the CCST project allowed Dr. Thida to show that cold coagulation is a safe alternative treatment for cervical lesions in areas where cryotherapy is not feasible due to difficulty in procuring medical grade carbon dioxide.

Our other CCST project in Equatorial Guinea, funded by the Government of Equatorial Guinea and Noble Energy, submitted an abstract titled "Competency test for visual inspection of cervical cancer lesions with acetic acid in Equatorial Guinea," which was submitted by MCDI Senior Health Program Officer Farshid Meidany. This abstract summarizes the results of a competency-based test given to health providers being trained on how to conduct VIA. The health workers were trained on four different competency areas. Based on the results of the competency testing, the abstract suggests that future programs should focus on each competency separately to allow for more in-depth training.

In addition to MCDI's presence during scientific sessions, MCDI is also an exhibitor at this year's meeting. To follow along with MCDI's presence at this year's ASTMH Annual Meeting, follow MCDI on twitter @MCDITweets.
