Center for Tobacco Independence

The Center for Tobacco Independence (CTI) brings
together a team of highly qualified individuals who focus on linking
smokers to the most effective methods to quit. The Center provides direct
treatment services, offers consultation for health systems and employers,
conducts research, and educates health professionals about tobacco use and
dependence & how to help smokers quit. CTI developed and manages
Maine's comprehensive, statewide tobacco treatment initiative, supported
by the Partnership for A Tobacco-Free Maine (including the Maine Tobacco
HelpLine and Tobacco Medication and Tobacco Training programs).

The Smoke-Free Housing Coalition of Maine is a group comprised of over 50 public health advocates, tenants, landlords, property managers, environmental health professionals and many others funded through generous grants from the Partnership For A Tobacco-Free Maine and the U.S. EPA Region-I Healthy Communities grant program, and was a 2006/2007 of a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Tobacco Policy Change grant that enabled the Coalition to expand their services exponentially. Their mission, through education, advocacy, and policy change, is to reduce the number of multi-unit residents who are involuntarily exposed to secondhand smoke. The Coalition offers technical assistance, education, signage, and an online registry, all for free! The Maine Youth Action Network (MYAN) trainings, supports, connects and advocates for youth organized to effect positive change through school and community-based peer programs. They are a partnership of youth and adult staff working to help youth and their advisors in peer groups to fulfill their own mission. Secondhand smoke can cause premature death and disease in children and adults who do not smoke Federal, state and local governments have passed laws and ordinances to reduce the involuntary exposure of citizens to secondhand smoke (SHS). In August and September 2008, the City of Portland passed two ordinances designed to further reduce involuntary exposure to SHS and promote the health of all residents and visitors.
