AIDS Orphan Crisis, South Africa
|
From 2000 to 2003, the number of AIDS orphans in the South African Province of KwaZulu-Natal tripled from 40,000 to approximately 120,000. MCDI responded to this dire situation in 2002 by helping to establish the Mavela Crèche, a child-care facility that cares for 77 orphans and vulnerable children. In conjunction with local partners in the sub-district of Ndwedwe and the USAID-funded Ndwedwe Child Survival Project, the crèche provides to the students education, meals, emotional support, income-generating opportunities, and guidance in applying for grants. In addition, the crèche gives educational assistance to 18 child-headed households. Caregivers at the crèche have been trained in early childhood education, are sensitive to the needs of AIDS orphans, and work to combat the stigma created by the disease.

MCDs six psychiatric group homes and supported apartments are located throughout Maine and provide housing and services to 58 clients with chronic mental illness.
Each facility has a full complement of staff that provide "around the clock" care and work in partnership with other professionals to provide quality rehabilitation and personal care services for our clients. We work in close partnership with the Department of Health and Human Services.
Individual growth is supported and each client is encouraged to strive for independence. When an individual is ready, transition to a less restrictive community setting is made. The goal is for each individual to achieve their objectives and lead a full life. We are happy to report that several individuals have made the transition successfully.

Residential Care Homes for Low-Income Elders
|
Assisted Living Services is the oldest program in the Community Living Division. There are four assisted living facilities and a subsidized apartment complex that together, provide care to approximately 243 residents throughout Maine. We strive to help these Mainers maintain quality of life by providing support and assistance for those struggling with the daily aging process.
MaineCare and private pay residents are welcome. Medical Care Development does not discriminate regarding race, age, religion, or ability to pay. An admission application must be completed for review by the Admission Committee.
MCDs goals are for residents to be as self-reliant as they can be, practice individual choice, retain dignity, and participate in activities within the community as much as they want. To assist residents in reaching these goals, MCD provides staff with many hours of training.
We are very proud of our oldest program and hope to continue to improve the quality of life for all who reside with us.

The Maine AIDS Alliance
|
The Maine AIDS Alliance was founded in 1988 as an alliance of community-based AIDS organizations to provide a forum for the exchange of support, resources and technical skills for members. MAA drafted legislation, planned summits, and helped create the AIDS service community that is active today. The first membership group consisted of fourteen AIDS service organizations and task forces from around the state. Today, many of the same organizations, some under different names, comprise MAA’s ten member organizations.

The Maine AIDS Walk 2009
|
It may not seem possible, but AIDS has been a part of the American life now for 25 years.
It was 1981 when HIV formally entered the American consciousness; and for a quarter of a century, from the bright lights of San Francisco to the soft star lit nights of Aroostook County, HIV-AIDS has touched the hearts, souls and lives of those we know; those with whom we work; those we love.
To mark this special time of continuing struggle and hope, the MCAP is sponsoring a special “AIDS WALK FOR ALL” in 2009.

Adolescent suicide is always a tragedy – for the victims, their families and friends, and the community. MCD has assisted the Maine Youth Suicide Prevention Program (MYSPP) in all facets of its work: (1) to educate gatekeepers who can recognize the precedent behaviors to suicide, (2) to assist schools to develop effective intervention protocols, (3) to educate young people to recognize suicide symptoms and teach them how to initiate an intervention, and (4) to assist communities who are seeking ways to respond to one or more youth suicides.
