Emergency Medical Services Development (1985 - 1999)


MCDI implemented a US Department of Health and Human Services-funded Emergency Medical Services (EMS) project in collaboration with the Red Crescent Society which addressed the development of all of the major components of the EMS system in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The project included the following programs:

  • Short and long-term national plans for the development of EMS in the Kingdom
  • Manpower training program for ambulance attendants, EMS intermediate technicians, and radio communications personnel
  • EMS transportation plan and ambulance maintenance program
  • EMS radio communications system and a public school health education program on EMS and related topics
  • EMS evaluation system including a computerized, data-based management information system

Commodities procured to support pre-hospital emergency care included ambulances and ambulance and communication equipment.
