The Ilembe District Child Survival Program (IDCSP) seeks to support efforts of the KwaZulu Natal Provincial and Ilembe District Departments of Health (DOH) to improve the health status of children under 5, women of reproductive age and HIV/AIDS-affected individuals and households. It was designed to strengthen, through capacity-building, the front line programs of the District DOH to reduce the burden of disease associated with the increased incidence of diseases addressed by Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses (IMCI) protocols (diarrhoea and dysentery, pneumonia, preventative immunizations, malnutrition) as well as Community PMTCT interventions.

This proposal was approved by the Ilembe District Management team and is incorporated into the "KwaZulu Natal Operation Plan to Accelerate Maternal, Neonatal, Child and Women's Health and Nutrition Interventions" for 2009-2010. The main focus of the project was to address Maternal, Neonatal, PMTCT and Child Health and Nutrition at Community Level as well as strengthening of health professionals in all aspects of Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses (IMCI).
