The Northern eThekwini Youth Friendly Project is an integrated facility-based and community outreach program targeting youth 10 to 24 years of age in all of Northern eThekwini Sub-district (N6). The overarching aim is to promote responsible sexual behavior and provide appropriate care and support for HIV positive youth.
The strategy is grounded in evidence-based research on the key drivers of the HIV epidemic in South African youth, as well as the epidemiological profile of HIV in South Africa, which highlights eThekwini Municipality and sub-populations of youth as priorities, particularly female youth. An effective response to the impact on youth and childhood vulnerability must be one which addresses the multidimensional needs of youth, including social, health, psychosocial, welfare and educational needs, within a supportive community setting.
